Once upon a time...

Happy holidays all - even if it is a little belated :) due to my lake of having anything new to show I thought I would share something that is now considerably older :) A long time ago.. in a galaxy far away I worked with Renown Entertainment... on concepting a classically animated game for mobile phones/Ipad. Sadly the game never got further than concept and a few animation tests.. yet! The plus side is I get to share a little handful of these rough tests with you now :)

The Peter Pan book that a group of artists (one of which I was) set off to create last year has finally arrived!

Book is $20 and 20% of the proceeds will be donated towards Oxfam. I will post more very soon on how to purchase a book online - till then if you know me or another artist that worked on it we will have plenty of copies on hand! :)

I feel like summer is taking its sweet time to get here so I did this quicky illustration in hopes that even if you’re somewhere where it’s raining and gray that this will cheer you up!
In other news I forgot to post this a long time ago but earlier this year I did some freelance animation for the Knowledge Network for their new Kids website.

I didnt have time to do a Halloween illustration cause I've been pretty busy - however I did do one for the studio I'm working at and they sent it out so all is well in the universe :) Johnny is the main character in Waves: Survivor and he is rocking the shark costume!

I found this super cute frame a couple weeks ago, the display size is actually only 3x3 (and did I mention its super cute?) So rather than putting a picture in I made my own cut out style family portrait... It's supposed to be Sean, myself and Fred (our cat) but in retrospect it doesn’t really look like us, oh well! It was still a blast to make ^-^

A couple months ago I obtained the Scott Morse book "scrap mettle", it's a fantastic book filled with amazing ink, water colour and cell vinyl illustrations/sketches. It was a great inspiration last night when I did these. Both paintings are from photos I took on trips, one from when I was in New York and the other Australia. I wasnt going for accuracy or detail, just feeling, or as Scott Morse says...
"organic and humble and real where it matters."

Here is a sneak peak of my characters KeeKee and Tulie from my 3D student film "Cerise".

It will be done in December but the sound won’t be complete till the end of January. It’s basically a story of two flightless birds fighting over one cherry on a tree branch and chaos ensues!

This isn’t the final lighting yet and the background will be a 2D matte painting... but you get the idea :)
Can’t wait to start animating on it!

Ok, it’s been a busy week for me, the spark animation festival was on here in Vancouver and I was trying to attend events for that while not falling behind in school :)

Two highlights were seeing "The Secret of Kells" an awesome feature from Irish Studio Cartoon Saloon and other various co-producers. I wouldn’t say it’s the best story I have ever seen but the art direction would be well worth it for anyone to see, it also has some great moments for animation too!
The other was the master class with Ricky Nierva, from Pixar's "UP"! It was really awesome, a class of only about 30 to 40 people and we got to spend pretty much the whole afternoon going over character design and some Pixar processes. He was a really decent and humble guy who totally gave credit where it was due. I don’t have any amazing secrets to share because he didn’t either (yes folks, it really is all about hard work!) but I do have a list of some fun sort of inspirational quotes (some from him, some from others passed on to him)

"Story is King"
"Design is re-designing"
"Fail early, fail often"
"If you’re not failing, you’re not taking enough risks"
"Story feeds art, you zig when they zag"
"Enjoy the struggle!"
"It’s not about trying it make things realistic; it’s trying to make it believable"

I also have a huge list of inspirational artists to Google for some time well wasted but unfortunately I'm out of time now so I will post them later this week!

Well, I'm back from the big NYC!
I'm not sure why I'm posting a pig but as soon as I have time to scan in some NYC scribbles and post them this is all you get!

To sum it up though these are some of my favorite moments from the trip and if you stop reading now I promise my feelings won’t be hurt :)

- Food food food!
- Life Drawing at the Society of Illustrators 'Jazz and Draw'
- Seeing my film at the Brooklyn Kids Film Festival (Thank you Brooklyn)
- The Ballet 'la sylphide'
- 'Wicked' and 'Rock of Ages' the Musicals (wicked was fan-friggen-tastic!)
- The Museums
- Central Park Zoo (it was mating season and I saw a number of animals doing the unmentionable) Don’t judge you would be curious too :P
- Shopping (deals only of course!)

Anyways, before NY I was doing some freelance and hopefully will continue. I'm trying to wrap up my film and finish up my proposal for the NFB/Folimage Residency and then on the 29th I'm back to school for 3D! Hopefully I will post before then but if not I wish you all a great week!!!
